Short Film (Vote tags)

Ever since her son died, Yeon Ok spends her time playing her son’s favorite game. She has forgotten how to interact with people or express her affection and goodwill. The lonelier she gets, the more burdensome she becomes to those around her. Director Lim Sang Su doesn’t pity her hastily. Nor does he turn away from her sorrow, but achieves an incredible balance instead. The calm, unexaggerated tone of the film draws our sympathy for Yeon Ok despite her obsessive behavior. Perhaps this emotional strength has been made possible by the combination of Kim So Hee’s acting and Lim’s directing. Kim fully conveys Yeon Ok’s sadness not only through her various facial expressions but also from the way she sits hunched up with her back towards us. We can only hope that rain washes away her sorrow so that she can find happiness. (Source: JIFF)
